HOME People Today, Americans know fewer veterans than any other generation

Because Americans know fewer veterans than ever before, there are a lot of misconceptions about military life. Many veterans are asked questions that make assumptions about their service—rather than ones that invite them to share their stories, skills and experiences.

Here at Starbucks, veterans, military spouses and civilians work side by side every day. Watch what happens.

Since 2013 we’ve hired over 10,000 veterans and military spouses—and we’re committed to hiring 15,000 more.

Along the way, we’re learning to ask better questions as co-workers, neighbors and friends—questions that help us all get to know each other. Looking for ideas about how to start a conversation? Here are suggestions from veterans and military spouses.

“Don’t be afraid to ask. Don’t be afraid at all. We want to tell you. We want to share our stories. We want people to know what our lives are like, just like you would.”
- Kelli W., Marine Spouse
Starbucks partner since 2008
