This creative take on the classic cocktail is easy to make and sure to delight. In place of the bourbon traditionally used to make an Old Fashioned, we’re substituting delicious homemade cold brew coffee. A 1912 Pike shout out to Starbucks coffee master Taylor Harbin for crafting the recipe for you to enjoy.

Meet the creator

When she isn’t concocting new twists on timeless recipes, Taylor Harbin is a coffee master and partner (employee) at Starbucks headquarters. There she works as a senior customer service specialist. Before that, she shared her passion for coffee as a barista and supervisor in our store in Olympia, Washington.

Cover a large mason jar with cheesecloth.

Add coffee. We recommend Starbucks® Kenya with a coarse grind.

Fill with pure, filtered water.

Steep for 12 hours at room temperature.

Strain and discard cheesecloth with coffee grounds.

Make orange syrup. Add water, raw sugar and orange peels to saucepan.

Bring to a boil to dissolve sugar, then let cool.

Add orange syrup and Angostura® bitters to glass and stir.

Add ice then top with cold brew concentrate.

Rim glass with orange peel.

Garnish with an orange twist and a cherry or two.

Serve and enjoy.

Cold Brew Old Fashioned Recipe

Our Cold Brew Old Fashioned recipe is a creative take on the classic cocktail. It's easy to make and sure to delight.
    For Cold Brew Old Fashioned (1 serving)
  • 6 oz cold brew concentrate (recipe below)
  • 2 T orange syrup (recipe below)
  • 4 dashes Angostura® bitters
  • Cherries (maraschino or brandied)
  • Orange peel
  • Ice
    For Cold Brew Concentrate (21 servings, 6 oz each)
  • 1/2 lb (8oz) coffee. Recommended: Starbucks® Kenya, coarsely ground
  • 1 gallon filtered water
  • 1 piece of cheesecloth for filter
    For Orange Syrup (16 oz)
  • 1 cup demerara or raw sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Peel from one orange
Directions Make Cold Brew Concentrate
Cover the top of a large mason jar with cheesecloth. Pour coffee into cheesecloth so it’s suspended in jar. Fill jar with water so coffee is submerged. Put top on jar and steep at room temperature for 12 hours. Store in an airtight jar in fridge for up to 5 days.

Make Orange Syrup
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat and cook until sugar dissolves and mixture just comes to a boil. Remove from heat and cool completely. Remove orange peels and pour into a glass jar. Store at room temperature.

Craft Old Fashioned
Combine orange syrup and bitters in a glass and stir. Add ice, then top with cold brew concentrate. Run inside of orange peel around the rim of the glass, then twist peel and add to drink along with a cherry. Stir then serve.
Pro Tip

For a truly authentic Old Fashioned, add a jigger (1.5 oz) of bourbon to your coffee cocktail. Pour bourbon in after the cold brew then stir to mix.
